A NUMBER of playgrounds in west London are set to be closed over the next four years as the council reveals plans to give them all a brand new makeover.

This comes after inspectors found that playgrounds were “reaching the end of their life”.

Hillingdon Council looks after more than 150 playgrounds across the borough, in areas including the towns of Uxbridge, Ruislip and Hayes.

Thousands of children in the borough enjoy the facilities all year round, but some playgrounds are no longer safe for use.

A total of 23 playgrounds in both parks and on housing estates will be closed over the next four years, council documents have revealed. All the playgrounds are set to receive new makeovers that will improve safety.

The need for new playgrounds was announced after an inspection by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

After years of use, inspectors found that some of the equipment was weathered and no longer suitable.

To avoid disruption to residents during school holidays, when playgrounds are in high demand, council documents say that work will only be carried out at “specific times” of the year. Ground and weather conditions will also determine when work can be completed, but it is expected to take four years until all 23 playgrounds are refurbished.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service has requested more details from Hillingdon Council about which playgrounds will be closed and renovated.

Councillors discussed the renovations on Thursday November 10 at the Cabinet meeting.
