■ If you are planning a new lawn from turf, prepare the soil. Dig well and remove y rubbish, give the area a thorough treading and raking to firm and level the surface, then unroll the turf over it.

■ Gather garden canes, clean them, remove any rotten ends and stand them in a deep can of plant-friendly wood preservative for several days.

■ Pick your last greenhouse tomatoes. Use undersized fruit for chutney and put larger ones in a box with a banana in a cool, dark place indoors to ripen.
