Rum

This Travelling Life: George Frost

George Frost founded London-based rum brand The Duppy Share in 2015. He shares his love of the Caribbean – and one trip there that didn’t go to plan

- WORDS JOE BATES

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE AND INTERESTING COUNTRIES AND PLACES THAT YOUR WORK HAS TAKEN YOU?

Well, the obvious answer would be the Caribbean… I will always be particularly fond of Jamaica and Barbados – not only as those are the islands that our rum is from, but also because I think they are the islands that best encapsulate the wonder of the Caribbean. The less obvious answer (but equally memorable) would be the Czech Republic. It was our first export territory (we now have 16), but visiting the country showed me what a globally loved spirit rum is. Wherever you are it unites people, and creates fun and memorable times.

WHAT RUM AND OTHER SPIRITS DO YOU LIKE TO BUY IN DUTY FREE WHEN TRAVELLING OVERSEAS?

Anything – and everything – that comes out of the Foursquare Distillery [in Barbados]. All of the Doorly’s range is phenomenal, but if you get your hands on one of Richard [Searle’s] limited releases – well that’s rum heaven right there.

Although it sounds cheesy, rum is as much about the environment you are in and the people you are with as the liquid itself. For me it would have to be sipping a five-yearold Doorly’s on ice (Richard hates it when I drink his rum over ice) at an amazing beach bar in Barbados. It was just me and the bartender, and it was the moment I first heard the story of The Duppy Share. I see it as no coincidence that two years later, when we finally tasted the final iteration of The Duppy Share, that a five-year-old rum from the Foursquare Distillery played a starring role.

WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO ENJOY DUPPY SHARE AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO DRINK IT?

That would have to be out of a flask at the Emirates stadium with my brother Miles who is unfortunately no longer with us. But aside from that, it would have to be a Pineapple Daiquiri using our new spiced rum at [London bar] Trailer Happiness.

TELL US ABOUT A STRANGE OR FUNNY EVENT THAT HAPPENED TO YOU ON YOUR TRAVELS.

It would be flying into Jamaica for a mate’s wedding; landing at the wrong airport; having to drive across the island; getting locked out of my car in just my boxer shorts on the side of a busy highway; and having to break back into the car by taking a rock to the window.
