Nursery’s bid to build canopy

-

A CANOPY could be installed over a children’s play area at a Widnes school after plans were drawn up.

Halton Borough Council has lodged the proposals concerning Simms Cross Primary School on Kingsway.

The plans seek to build a cantilever canopy over a play area.

A design and access statement said the area is currently an open space with ‘nowhere to seek shelter from the elements’.

The proposed canopy would be on the school’s elevation facing onto Kingsway, have red frames, and be made from galvanized mild steel and powder coated to provide ‘robust’ structure requiring ‘little’ maintenance.

The statement said: “The canopy will provide a secure, dry, pleasant area for the school pupils to play.

“All rain water will be diverted into the existing guttering away from the canopy to the existing drains, ensuring a completely dry, clean area for the children to play in.

“This application is in a sustainable location within the school boundaries and is to be used for recreational purposes only.”

It added: “Overall the application represents a scheme that will provide the school with an excellent additional learning resource, allowing the current pupils to have access to an outside play area all year round.”
