Trust honours its oldest volunteer with tree planting
AHUNDRED trees were planted by Halton Housing Trust (HHT) in Runcorn to honour one of the borough’s centenarians.
The planting took place at Halton Lodge’s Children’s Centre for Bill Armes, who has turned 100.
By working in partnership with Halton Play Council (HPC) who fundraised for the trees, and Groundwork who purchased them on the Play Council’s behalf, HHT provided the man power to plant the trees.
A HHT spokeswoman said the trees are to commemorate Bill’s many contributions to Halton and being a key member of the Halton community.
Bill has been a volunteer at the HPC for more than 20 years, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The chosen location for the tree planting, Halton Lodge Children’s Centre, is symbolic of Bill’s hard work in helping to improve young children’s lives across the borough during his time volunteering at the Play Council.
Staff members from HPC, HHT, ● and Groundwork all attended the event to see Bill plant the 100th tree.
Ken Tonge, a board member at Halton Play Council, said: “I would just like to thank everyone for being here today, and to thank everyone for all their hard work to make this tribute to Bill happen. Bill has been a key member of our community, and it is lovely to see him get the recognition he deserves.”
Ben Reese, HHT’s environmental services technical manager, also attended the event.
He said: “It was great to see Bill planting the 100th tree to commemorate his centenary, along him seeing so many from the local community join him on this very special day.”
