Helping older drivers stay safe on roads for longer

-

HALTON Council’s road safety team has launched a scheme which aims to help senior road users to drive safely for longer.

The free two-hour course is run by approved driving instructors to enhance drivers’ practical skills, gives motorists aged 65 and over the chance to brush up on their observation skills, learn how to cope with other road users’ mistakes and address any concerns they have.

The session is carried out in the drivers’ own cars and there are 100 places available.

A council spokeswoman said the session is not a driving test with no pass or fail, but the instructor will share insights they have into the driving style and how drivers negotiate roads, traffic and hazardous situations.

Among those who completed the course is Malcolm Tough, 79, who said he enjoyed it and found it interesting and useful and helped him to be a safer driver.

Cllr Stan Hill (transportation) said: “We hope the launch of this free driving course will play an integral part in ensuring the safety of our senior road users, by helping them to stay safe in what is becoming a challenging driving ● environment.”

Michelle Simpson, Halton Council road safety co-ordinator, said: “The council understands the importance of driving to people as they get older and the independence it gives them.

“We want senior road users to continue driving and feel safe and confident as they do so.”
