Jack’s clean sweep at table tennis tournament

Nicola Daley, of Prescot, said: “When we went over to her she saw our name and said ‘oh Widnes, I was born near Widnes’.

“She was very nice and friendly, we took a couple of photos, had a bit of a general chat and then she said she had to warm up as she was running the relay with Sebastian Coe.

“We wished her luck and she did the same.”

Also representi­ng Widnes Wasps in Monaco were Helen Davies, of Widnes, Helen Moore, of Prescot, Julie Moses and Michele Lindsay, of Rainhill, and Stacey Clark, of Great Sankey.

Helen Davies was the first Widnes Wasp to finish the 10k in a time of 48 minutes, 55 seconds.

Linda Moore, of Widnes Wasps, said: “It’s been a busy few weeks for the Wasps, a running club celebratin­g its 30th anniversar­y.

Eight runners took part in the Trimpell 20-mile ● race in Lancaster; Lynsay Adair, from Widnes, completed two back-to-back trail marathons on consecutiv­e days in the West Pennine Moors Double Marathon challenge – and was first lady home on A TABLE tennis star who took up the sport in Widnes has completed a clean sweep of national titles at a recent competitio­n.

Jack Hunter-Spivey competed at the British Para Table Tennis Championsh­ips in Grantham.

He claimed the open wheelchair title, as well as the class five singles and the open wheelchair doubles.

The 21-year-old – who started playing at a youth club in Widnes and joined Halton Table Tennis Club – came through the roundrobin class five singles undefeated both days; and Catherine McGann scored a personal best in the Bradford 10k. “Meanwhile, nearly 20 members are training for a collection of spring marathons, including London, Manchester, ● and combined with runner-up Dan Bullen to win the open wheelchair doubles.

The duo defeated Kevin Plowman and Roger Hales in the final, before beating former national champion Plowman in the semi-finals and five-time Paralympia­n Sue Gilroy in the final to win the open wheelchair title.

Jack said: “It is a great feeling to be national champion again.

“I’ve been on top for five years now and it gets tougher every year.

“The junior players are getting a Brighton and Liverpool Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

The club has more than 60 members and meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at Birchfield Road Sports & Social Club in Widnes. lot better and it’s been strong competitio­n this year.

“I’m really proud to be British champion and I don’t take it for granted – it is nice to be the best in Britain but everyone else is fighting for it as well so I’ve got to be on my game all the time.

“I’ve not dropped a set all weekend and I’ve struggled a bit with an injury to my shoulder so I’ve battled through and showed some determinat­ion so I’m happy with the level I played.

“I’ve just got to crack on now.”
