School teams visit stadium for league tournament

-

● PRIMARY schools from across Halton took part in a rugby league tournament at a recent Widnes Vikings fixture.

Children aged 10 and 11 from St Bede’s, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, St Basil’s, Oakfield, Holy Family Cronton and St Michael’s competed in games at the Select Security Stadium.

Vikings first team players Patrick Ah Van and Chris Dean watched on with the tournament’s final taking place at the Vikings match against Leigh Centurions in June.

Widnes Vikings community co-ordinator Liam Clark said: “We’re really proud to launch this tournament.

“We’d like to thank New Directions Education for their continued support of the Vikings and this brilliant initiative, which gives children the amazing opportunity of playing in front of a crowd at our stadium.”

The Year 5 and Year 6 Super League has been supported by New Directions Education, one of the largest education recruitment and training specialists in the UK.

The supply teaching agency has offices based across the country, including the Wirral and Liverpool.

Recruitment consultant Lauran Collins said: “We are thrilled to be back involved for the second year in a row and it was nice to see some familiar faces from last year’s team taking part again.

“There was some outstanding rugby being played by those taking part and it is so exciting seeing them play on their home team’s pitch.

“It is a huge honour and not many will have that opportunity so it is great of Widnes Vikings to be so involved with the school communities.

“The final should be a good event and I will be excited to award the winners trophy yet again.”
