New chairman takes the chain at Probus Club
A RETIRED architect has been appointed chairman of Runcorn Probus Club.
Brian Wood received the chain of office from his predecessor Bill Kellett at the organisation’s annual meeting.
David Haskell, of Runcorn Probus Club, said Mr Wood was born and bred in Runcorn, and attended Helsby Grammar School before studying architecture.
He added that as an avid cricketer, Mr Wood holds what could be a record in taking all 10 wickets for Runcorn against Hartford in a 2nd XI (reserve team) match in the 1960s.
In addition he is a lifelong Everton FC fan and is armchair viewer of most sports.
His other interests are reading, photography and videography.
Mr Haskell said: “In his closing address Bill said how much he had enjoyed his chairmanship and thanked the committee and membership for the support that they had given him and that he was happy to hand over to Brian who he was confident would be a successful and active chairman.
“In his inaugural speech Brian thanked Bill for the good work that he had done in his two years in office, during which time there had been many interesting visits and outings as well as speakers, thanks to Alan Townley, the speaker’s secretary.
“He hoped that during his year in office he would at least be able to match the standards set by Bill.
“Runcorn Probus Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at which speakers on a variety of interesting subjects address the meeting.
“In between times walks, dining out and visits to many interesting ● places are arranged by both committee and members.
“Members, friends and partners are invited to join in many of these events.
“It is a growing club currently having 57 members.
“If you are male, retired and have worked in Halton or the surrounding area and are interested in joining please contact the secretary Alec Hough on 01928 565 842.”
