Johnson accelerates to achieve podium finishes in championships
RUNCORN racer Gavin Johnson took another step towards motorsport success last weekend as he competed with PDC Racing and teammate Pip Hammond at Silverstone finishing the weekend leading the BRSCC Toyo Tyres Porsche Championship.
Off the back of two good results at Oulton Park last month, Johnson was determined to build on a strong start to the season that he admits surprised even him.
“Oulton saw me take two solid results, the highlight a great drive in race one to take third on the last corner of the last lap,” he said.
“I broke the previous lap record in qualifying so it really signalled the intent for this year.
“Leaving Oulton, I sat third in the championship.
“I never expected that with the quality of the field we have this year”
Buoyed by a strong start to the season Johnson wasted no time at Silverstone qualifying second behind impressive teammate Hammond, duly recording the team’s first-ever one-two.
An excellent qualifying was not the end of the excitement on day one as the team came home one-two in the race with Hammond setting the fastest lap and Johnson recovering from avoiding a spinning Boxster to drive through the field from eighth to second place.
Day two and it was déjà vu in race two as Johnson and Hammond recorded an unprecedented third one-two in as many sessions.
Race three later that day was the reverse grid, Johnson got caught in traffic and made it from ninth to third to finish all three races on the podium with his teammate.
“Ive not had a better weekend yet in a race car than Silverstone,” continued Johnson.
“Three podiums for both me and my teammate goes some way to repaying the team’s faith and support.
“I am delighted to be leading the championship with Pip second.” ● Rounds six and seven of the 22-race season are at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire over the weekend of May 6-7. ●
