AWIDNES teenager received special recognition after running a host of fundraising events in memory of a friend.

Aidan Jackson was nominated for the Young Citizen Award by Widnes Rotary Club for his efforts over the last few years.

He was one of seven young people from the UK and Ireland to receive a Young Citizen Award during a live BBC presentation by Ellie Crisell.

Along with his mum and dad, the 14-year-old spent two days in Manchester with the Rotary Club and was interviewed several times by the BBC.

As well as a trophy and certificate, Aidan was also presented with a cheque for £500 from the Rotary Club and will be donated to The Olivia Alice Foundation.

Aidan has been raising funds for The Olivia Alice Foundation since September 2014 after his friend Olivia Walker passed away aged just 15.

Last year he filled the Select Security Stadium – the home of Widnes Vikings – with 10,500 cuddly toys in support of the charity.

Aidan would thanked Widnes Rotary Club for nominating him for the award and gave special thanks to Linda Ord for looking after him and his family during the ● awards weekend.

Aidan said: “The award is not just for me, it is for Olivia and also for my family and members of the public who have supported each of my fundraising events as without them this award would not have happened.” When asked about future events, Aidan, who has had casts and splints on both legs, said “I have my appointment later today at Alder Hey so will find out if I need surgery or not, until I know my treatment plan for my legs I am unable to plan another event just yet but I am sure it won’t be too long before I come up with an idea so watch this space.” The Olivia Alice Foundation has its annual fundraiser entitled Olivia’s Butterfly Ball on Saturday, May 20, at The Crowne Plaza in Speke, Liverpool. Tickets cost £40 each and includes a three course meal. Aidan is urging people to buy tickets to make the event a huge success. For tickets call 07890 013 808.
