A1 4 - Y E AR- O L D from Runcorn has pledged to speak up for Halton’s young people after being elected the borough’s Member Of Youth Parliament.

Ewan Jago, who attends Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, has taken on the role after winning 29% of the ballot to see off competition from five other candidates.

His manifesto included a focus on sport and leisure and a call for 16-yearolds to receive the right to vote in UK elections.

He takes over from Thomas Norris who is stepping down after passing his 19th birthday.

Ewan was named Halton’s MYP at an event at CRMZ on Kingsway in Widnes on Friday, March 31.

He will represent Halton’s 12,000-plus young people aged 11-18 at the UK Youth Parliament as well as working on neighbourhood issues and developing his own campaigns.

During the ceremony, his predecessor Thomas Norris gave a speech reflecting on his year in office and Halton Youth Cabinet presented its first round of school participation and democracy Awards, in the presence of David Parr, chief executive of Halton Borough Council’s.

An event spokesman said these prizes were presented to schools demonstrating that they meet criteria around the ‘teaching about democracy and seeking to involve their students in youth voice and participation opportunities’.

Ashley School, Cavendish School and The Heath School scooped gongs during the bash.

It is hoped that the awards become a regular fixture in the youth cabinet calendar and that all schools in Halton go on to achieve the award.

Ewan said: “I want to thank everyone who voted for me and pledge I will do my best to speak up for the interests of young people in the area.

“Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have anything you want to bring to my attention.”
