Baxter’s triumph is so crucial

-

ON Friday evening in the Widnes & District Darts League, the Mill Brow SC RTB League continued.

In Division Two, Widnes Cricket Club at home to the Mersey Hotel kept the pressure on the Goldmine in the race for the title to stay in second place and a promotion spot.

Ste Heesom and Ben Hewitt got the Cricket Club side off to a good start, but Paul Cotty pulled a game back and Rob Cotty & Paul Cotty with a 15 dart display soon had it all square. The lead was restored through Darren Pilling & Andy Atkin and Billy Webb & Ben Hewitt to edge closer to taking the match. Danny Shipley kept the Mersey’s hopes alive, but Kevin Baxter soon dashed them to give the Widnes Cricket Club the welcome victory. Rob Cotty only playing for pride added to the Mersey’s tally taking the last game.

The Birchfield at home to the Majors Arms, dominated the match.

Despite going 1-0 down as Kevin Grice took the opening game for the Major’s Arms then falling behind for a second time through Mark France after Dave Herley had levelled, the result was still convincing. Parity was restored through Dave Herley & Keith Allan, then an 18 dart display from Rob Baxter & Carl Bryan put the Birchfield in the lead which was added to by Johnny Leather & Ian Sharples. Back in the singles, Keith Allen, Carl Bryan and Matty Fisher put the result well and truly in the bag and kept up promotion and title hopes, whilst the Majors are rooted to the foot of the table.

The Cricketers Arms hosting Hough Green SC, had to dig deep as the visitors made a good start. Duane Lawton opened the scoring for the Green, only to see Brian Dwyer cancel it out. Keith Glover with a 14 darter then restored the lead. In the pairs, Hough Green via Ste Cosgrove & Duane Lawton and Keith Glover & George Plumpton had the Cricketers staring at defeat. Brian Dwyer & Graham Fenny kept the home side in with a slim chance in final three singles and they took it as Brian Mercer, Peter Mason and Graham Fenney pulled off a great comeback to take a memorable match.
