Runcorn start the season in style

-

with R Hughes and G Walmsley beginning to turn the game round. But Lymm’s slow start cost them and when they lost Hughes bowled by Scowcroft for 61 before Tom Heath picked up two more wickets, they only managed 138/6.

Runcorn started their innings with confidence, with another stalwart Mark Cahill relishing the chance to play at one of his favourite grounds. That confidence was dented somewhat when Bowen went lbw for 0. Scowcroft was in next but also went cheaply for 8.

Order was restored when Alan Watt came in but Cahill went for 27 bowled by Spavin.

Skipper Andy Booth was in next but was caught for 0 so steady hands were required and they came in the shape of Stuart Drury and Ian Conway.

Chasing 138 with plenty of overs and wickets left, Runcorn didn’t need to do anything to rash, the perfect scenario for Drury and Conway. And they duly saw the game out with Drury finishing on 51no and Conway on 14no with seven overs to spare.

The weekend finished on a winning note with the 3rd X1 beating Tattenhall CC in the Joseph Holt T20 competition. After winning their league last year the 3rd X1 have a new skipper in Ryan Richardson. ●

Runcorn won the toss but decided to bat first. Openers Matt Keenan and Will Magee started well on an excellent pitch, Keenan finished on 16 while Magee scored an impressive 43 including one 6 and six 4s before being g runout.

Next in was DJ Mcnamara whose 39 included three 4s and three 6s.#

Cont r ibut tions from J Woodruff 8, R Richardson 1, C McCaffery 7no enabled Runcorn to score 142 off their 20 overs.

Tattenhall’s i innings never really got going with their first their batsman totalling 17 runs between them, R Richardson, DJ Mcnamara and C Hargreaves sharing those wickets.

Tattenhall staged a mid-order recovery with their next three batsmen scoring 19 (bowled Magee), 12 (caught M Jenner bowled M Keenan) and 23 (stumped Woodruff bowled L Keenan).

With overs quickly running out it was left to one of Runcorn’s youngest ever players, Tom Drury to take the final wicket of the match and bowl A Sandland for 11, leaving Tattenhall on 111off 20 overs, 31 runs short of Runcorn’s total. ● This Saturday, Runcorn 1st X1 travel to Stockport Georgians, the 2nd XI are at home to Romily while on Monday, the 3rd X1 are away to Widnes CC.
