BODY scans and full searches could be undertaken at Sir Elton John’s upcoming concert in Widnes in light of the recent suicide attacks in Manchester and London.

Halton Borough Council chief executive David Parr has announced that enhanced security measures will be in place for Sir Elton’s show at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday, June 18.

It is due to be the biggest music event staged in Halton in more than a quarter of a century since the Stones Roses played their iconic gig at Spike Island in Widnes in May 1990.

But the council – which owns the stadium – has moved to ramp up security at the event following tragic death of 22 people at the Manchester Arena on the evening of Monday, May 22, by a suicide bomber at the conclusion of an Ariana Grande concert and Saturday night’s London Bridge attacks.

Concert-goers are being asked not to bring large bags and for their cooperation at the event.

Mr Parr said: “The ● safety and security of visitors and staff at the stadium is our highest priority and in the light of the recent atrocities, we would like to assure everyone that we are taking heed of all current Government and police advice and are implementing all necessary actions to ensure those attending events at the stadium are in the safest possible environment.

“Enhanced security measures will be in place for the forthcoming Elton John concert.

“We are requesting that concert-goers do not bring large bags, and are advising them that full searches and body scans may be in operation.

“We ask for your full cooperation, and apologise for any inconvenience which may be caused.

“This advice has been published on the Select Security Stadium website.”
