CARE HOME CONCERNS
‘24 HOUR Care’ on May 25 – the writer is quite right – not all care homes are the same.
Some are successful and others not so fortunate and have difficulties managing within stringent budgets.
However they do have something in common – trained, steadfast and dedicated staff who are willing and able at all times looking after elderly people especially those suffering from dementia. It is a truism to say that as heart-breaking as it is to make a decision regarding a family member who is suffering with dementia that the only option is to seek power of attorney when faced with a loved one who persistently refuses to go into a care home with the knowledge that this is the only solution.
This maybe the case of the 91-yearold man mentioned in the letter.
I think I am speaking for many of your readers in that the grieving family of this man deserves support and understanding and not the aggravation brought on by condemnation and having their dilemma reported in the public domain.
Sadly. I think the writer of the letter ought to seek advice and counselling if he feels so strongly about the issue considering that the numbers of people suffering with dementia is on the increase daily and high on the agenda in today’s society and indeed has taken over from cancer as the biggest scourge of the century
