AN allotments project is due to be launched in Runcorn this July. Halton Housing Trust said the scheme will give residents the chance to plant and grow their own fresh food.

The Change Grow And Share project is scheduled to be launched on Thursday, July 27, taking place from noon-1pm on Thursday, July 27, at Grangeway Community Centre.

A spokeswoman for the homes group said its aim is to bring tenants together to grow produce, which can then be shared out in the area for free.

It is hoped the initiative will reduce social isolation, provide free healthy food and a place to have a hobby.

The trust said gardening is scientifically proven to boost health and wellbeing, and provides enjoyable outdoor exercise and can ease stress.

It was set up by Halton Housing Trust in conjunction with Runcorn Veterans Association, Halton Borough Council and other residents.

Work has taken place to prepare the site for use including installing raised beds, cleaning up the area, starting the initial growing and attending courses.

The trust spokeswoman said the launch day will be funpacked and allow Grangeway residents to explore the communal garden, learn about gardening, take part in activities and express interest in taking responsibility for a raised bed.

Change Grow And Share is a pilot project and pending success could be expanded to West Bank in Widnes and Pine Road in Runcorn.

Grangeway residents who would like to attend the launch day or would like to find out more information should call Halton Housing Trust on 0151 510 5285 or 0151 510 5181, or email Debbie.Jameson@haltonhousing.org or Hannah.Ireland@Haltonhousing.org ●
