Extended support for ICU outpatients

-

FORMER intensive care unit (ICU) patients from Runcorn and Widnes and their families and friends have been invited to join a support group to aid ongoing recovery at Warrington Hospital

Warrington And Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WHH) said the service offers a chance to meet in an informal setting and discuss their experiences and concerns.

A WHH spokeswoman said leaving hospital and returning home is a major step in recovery but that it still takes time to return to a normal life.

She said the same support that was had in hospital will not be available and it will be a difficult time for the patient and their relatives, and a period of feeling depressed or frustrated is normal if progress is not as hoped for. Whether an expatient or a relative, being able to talk about experiences with others who understand can really help, the trust said. Warrington’s intensive care team has sent invitation letters to all ex-patients and their families but anyone who has not received one and would like to attend can make contact.

The ICU Steps support group is on from 6-8pm on Thursday, June 15; Thursday, August 3; Thursday, October 5; and Thursday, December 7; all at The Tim Parry And Johnathan Ball Peace Centre, off Cromwell Avenue, Great Sankey, Warrington.

Parking is free at the venue, with disabled access and plenty of refreshments.

Those who wish to attend or have questions should call 01925 662 579 or 01925 662 651.

ICU Sister Heather Harvey said: “The effects of being critically ill can last for several years, particularly the psychological aspect.

“We offer follow up clinics as part of their ongoing recovery and this is an extension of our support and an opportunity to talk to others with similar experiences to aid in recovery.”
