U7 Greens’ great display goes unrewarded as Blackbrook strike late

-

Blackbrook U7 16 HFH U7 Greens 12 HALTON Farnworth Hornets U7 Greens travelled to St Helens for what turned out to be their hardest game to date as they faced a Blackbrook side boasting an impressive unbeaten record so far this season.

It was Greens who took it to the home side with some solid defensive line speed showing this was not going to be a repeat of their last encounter which saw their opponents run out easy winners.

First to impress was Niall Dooley with some solid running to gain field advantage allowing Malachy Arrowsmith to force his way over for Greens’ first try.

Blackbrook responded with a try soon after but it was the Greens’ commitment to the tackle that impressed all who watched this encounter with outstanding work-rate in defence from George Doran, Luke Holland and Arrowsmith with Billy Rowlands, although the smallest player on the field, stepping up to the mark with some impressive tackles.

Cobie Scott was next on the scoresheet with a looping run to the corner to top a performance that earned him the coaches’ award.

The second half saw Blackbrook pull ahead but their lead proved to be shortlived as a darting run from Ryan O’Conner brought the scores level yet again.

Both defences held firm until the final minutes when Blackbrook snatched a late try to claim a narrow win.

This was by far the best performance to date from a Greens side growing in confidence and team unity.

Top tackler award went to Niall Dooley with Luke Holland gaining the man-ofthe-match honour with parents’ trophy going to Malachy Arrowsmith.

HFH U8 Reds 12 Leigh Miners U8 13 ON a very hot summer’s day HFH U8 Reds came off second best to a well-drilled Leigh Miners Rangers side.

In attack for HFH there was some hard yards made by George Sanderson, Aiden Clarke and Euan McPherson with Ollie Jenkins being stopped inches short of the line. In the end it was James Prescott who crossed for the first of Hornets’ tries.

In defence there was some strong tackles in the middle from Mathew Sinclair who was consistent throughout and this earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Good cover tackles from Dylan Stephenson and Prescott saw him handed the away coaches’ man-of the-match honour.

Ollie Jenkins was the Hornets’ top tackler with the player delivering some of his trademark ‘boomers’.

All in all, this was a good natured game of rugby league where both sets of players and supporters should be applauded for their excellent attitude. HFH U7 Reds 10 Leigh Miners U7 9 LEIGH MINERS made a great start in the clash racing ahead 3-0 in tries but the Hornets struck back well to take a 4-3 lead.

With some great defensive work and some excellent forward attacking there were tries from Connor Farrell, Alfie Grabaskey and Charlie George with two each, Tyler Finnigan, Mason Rigby, Max Fallon and Tom Smith with one apiece.

Man-of-the-match went to Tyler Finnigan while Connor Farrell was top tackler.
