Total eclipse of S*n campaign

-

THE Halton councillor who table a motion for the local authority to back the Total Eclipse Of The S*n campaign has said it has been welcomed by the public.

Cllr Kevan Wainwright, right, said he understood that although the council cannot tell shops what to stock, he hoped it would encourage consumers to steer clear of the newspaper because of its controversial coverage of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.

Cllr Wainwright, Labour, Hough Green, tabled the motion and was seconded by Norton South councillor Dave Cargill.

It gained unanimous support at a full session of Halton Council.

The Hough Green councillor said a post on the Halton Labour Party branch’s Facebook page reached 9,000 readers.

Mr Wainwright said: “As you know the council can’t dictate to local retailers what they can and can’t sell.

“What we’re hoping is people will notice and not buy The S*n newspaper.

“The whole Liverpool City Region is saying we don’t want The S*n newspaper.”

The motion said: “We understand the continuing feelings expressed by people throughout the Liverpool City Region at the inaccurate and hurtful reporting of the disaster by The Sun newspaper and support the efforts to raise awareness of this campaign.”
