Experiments in lab learning
GCSE pupils from Sandymoor School in Runcorn have been experiencing life as undergraduate chemistry students during a visit to Thornton Science Park (TSP).
The students on the trip were able to use complex equipment at the University Of Chester’s chemical engineering labs that otherwise would not be available.
This allowed them to complete practical work that is now mandatory in the GCSE science syllabus.
Students carried out an experiment to determine the unknown concentration of an acid solution using acid-base titration.
They learned to use chemistry kit such as pipette bulbs, pipettes, burettes and about the technique and its associated theory.
The workshops were organised by Phil Sturla, technical officer at the University Of Chester’s faculty of science and engineering at TSP with support from his colleagues Ian Massey, Zuzana Vobecka and laboratory manager James Nicholson.
Dawn Johnson, Sandymoor School head of science, said: “Many ● thanks to Phil and members of the technical team, who were happy to set up the experiment for us over three weekly sessions.
“The experience of working in university laboratory facilities was really valuable for our students and very motivational.
“The students have had a fantastic time in world-class, cutting edge facilities and it has been a really valuable experience for them to complete a required GCSE practical.”
Mr Surla said: “The students were excellent ambassadors for the school. We were all amazed by the skill of the Sandymoor students, many of whom showed great promise to become future scientists!” ●
