Potter and Linnets on cloud nine

Middlewich Town 1 Runcorn Linnets 9 FOLLOWING their narrow 1-0 loss to Marine in their previous pre-season outing, Runcorn Linnets returned to winning ways with a very comfortabl­e 9-1 victory at Middlewich Town last Saturday afternoon.

Linnets went ahead on 19 minutes with a close-range header from Freddie Potter.

Six minutes before the interval they doubled their advantage when Mitch Bryant netted via a coolly-placed strike inside the penalty area. ●

The home side hit back with a goal a minute before the break but within seconds, Linnets restored their two-goal lead thanks to a tap-in from Stuart Wellstead after a mistake from the Town goalkeeper.

Two minutes into the second period, it was 4-1 to Linnets with a trialist on the scoresheet with a firm strike.

On 54 minutes, Potter netted his second goal and Linnets’ fifth with a well-placed touch inside the 18-yard box before a trialist headed home number six just after the hour mark.

A fine header from Wellstead on 66 minutes increased the advantage to 7-1 before Antony Hickey got in the goalscorin­g act with a superb chip 10 minutes from time.

And five minutes later, Potter rounded-off the scoring completing his personal hat-trick with a fantastic header inside the penalty area. ● LINNETS will have an extra warm-up game ahead of the new season with a visit to Prescot Cables confirmed. Michael Ellison’s team will go to Volair Park for what will now be the club’s final 2017 preseason friendly on Monday, July 31 (kick off 7.45pm).

Linnets’ season opens the following Saturday – August 5 – with a home tie against Hemsworth Miners Welfare in The Emirates FA Cup extra-preliminar­y round (kick-off 3pm).
