Jobless numbers in decline across region

-

THE number of residents claiming out-of-work benefits fell in Halton during August according to latest figures.

Among all working ages, the count dropped from 3,265 jobseekers to 3,160, equivalent to 4% of the population.

The Office For National Statistics (ONS) said that in the 18-24 age range it fell by five claimants to 675 young adults, or 6.7% of the workforce for that group.

Alan Harrison, Jobcentre Plus spokesman, said there were more vacancies in the Liverpool City Region than at any time in the last five years and the for the first time he could recall, the North West employment rate was higher than the national average.

A boost could be on the way for the labour market also as the Christmas recruitment drive kicks in during autumn, he said, adding that there will still be employees required to continue post-completion work when the Mersey Gateway bridge opens.

Mr Harrison said Jobcentre Plus is working with 15-20 employers in the area to recruit for full time, long term roles in retail and hospitality.

He added that sectorbased work academies were continuing to ensure interviews for those who complete their placements.

Nationally, the Government hailed the latest job statistics as achieving record results.

Damian Hinds, employment minister, said: “The strength of the economy is helping people of all ages find work, from someone starting their first job after leaving education, to those who might be starting a new career later in life.

“It’s great news in the North West where the number of people in work is 3.45m, up 75,000 on the year.

“At 74.5%, the employment rate is at a record high, while at 4% the unemployment rate in the North West is at a record low for the region, and lower than the national rate of 4.3%.

“But there is more to do, and we will continue to build on our achievements through our employment programmes and the work of Jobcentre Plus.”
