Mault hits a double in triumph

-

Runcorn III 3 Denbigh II 0 FOLLOWING on from last weeks’ good display in defeat against league leaders Wrexham, Runcorn gave their Welsh neighbours a difficult afternoon and ran out deserved winners recording a 3-0 victory.

The plan of moving senior players John Irving and Steve Currie into attack paid off from the outset.

Runcorn were able to apply pressure and create goalscoring chances much more frequently than of late which soon yielded penalty corners.

After squandering the first couple, the regular routine worked, and Ian Townley fired in the first goal of the game to put Runcorn ahead 1-0.

Runcorn then made the mistake of sitting back, and Denbigh were able to get a foothold in the encounter.

The Runcorn rearguard, though, were up to the challenge and when the home side pushed forward again it was only a matter of time before they netted a second goal.

An excellent team move into the scoring circle saw Robert Mault coolly slot the ball home.

The 2-0 scoreline at half-time was a fair reflection of play to that point.

The second period started with Denbigh pushing hard as expected and Runcorn had to defend well.

But gradually the play reverted to plenty of Runcorn pressure and when Mault seized on a defensive mistake to hit home the third goal, the match was decided.

Perhaps Runcorn should have scored more goals having created several good opportunities but the final 3-0 scoreline was exceptionally pleasing nevertheless.

Dan White and Jake Walker put in solid performances and Riley Cooper excited again with his flair.

But young Ben Wade more than matched the senior players on the field with his excellent control and running catching the eye.
