Understrength Widnes are outshone by the Diamonds

-

Widnes Wild Women 1 Kingston Diamonds 5 THE Widnes Wild Women’s team fell to a 5-1 defeat at home to Kingston Diamonds in their Women’s Premier League match at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.

Missing several key players, the home side were unable to make any sort of real impression on the visitors from Hull and were heavily out-shot in the first period.

Kingston went ahead after 10 minutes and added a second goal three minutes later to lead 2-0 at the first break.

The second period saw much better play from the Wild.

They enjoyed more periods of possession and out-shot the Diamonds but were unable to find a way past Kingston netminder Charlotte Cook.

Kingston scored two more goals – one on either side of the halfway point – and, although Widnes put their net under increasing pressure in the latter stages of the period, the advantage remained 4-0 after 40 minutes of play.

The game was effectively killed off as a contest three minutes into the third period with a fifth goal for the Diamonds – a hat-trick goal for Sophie Campbell.

Seconds after the restart, the Wild’s Katie Hills zigzagged her way through the Kingston defence to slot away a well-taken individual effort but that was the last goal action in the game and Widnes slumped to a 5-1 loss.

The defeat leaves the Wild Women second-bottom of the WPL table with just one win from nine starts. They have three games left this season – one at home followed by two away.

They have their last home game of the season on Sunday, March 18 when they play the Bracknell Firebees in the Women’s Premier League at Planet Ice Widnes. The contest has a 5.30pm face-off. ●
