Kingsway fighters hit form to demonstrate their excellent progress

-

BOXERS from Kingsway ABC were in action last week, with fighters representing the club on three separate shows during a busy few days.

First up was Gerard Hall, who made his debut for the club on Tuesday in a skills bout against Callum Moran of Sefton ABC at Liverpool’s Fusion nightclub.

Both boxers gave a decent account of their individual abilities in an entertaining contest, with Gerard showcasing good footwork and a willingness to put pressure on his well-schooled opponent.

On Thursday, Sean Hagan and Sam Gilhooley travelled to Burnley to box on the Clayton ABC show, with both lads taking on opponents from the well-supported host club.

Eleven-year-old Sean, who is currently the club’s youngest registered boxer, faced Ed Stokes in a skills bout.

He took the improvement shown recently in the gym into the ring with him, cutting down his opponent’s space with good movement, defending well behind a tight guard and countering well behind his jab in an encouraging display.

Following on from this, Sam Gilhooley took on the unbeaten Max Dunn, a strong, go-forward boxer.

This was an excellent contest, with Dunn attempting to apply pressure throughout all three rounds.

However this was a tactic that for the most part Gilhooley managed to negate by making his opponent miss frequently, whilst landing excellent counter-attacking shots of his own and moving out of danger.

An impressive display of controlled boxing saw Gilhooley claim a unanimous points decision win against a fighter who will surely have more good days than bad.

And on Saturday, Will Smith and Gemaine Myles both made their debuts for the club in skills bouts at the Parr Hall in Warrington.

Both boys competed extremely well against home boxers from the Phoenix Fire Club and emerged with great credit.

Will demonstrated the huge improvements he has made since he joined the club against a much taller opponent, whilst Germaine showed determination and improving fitness against an equally strong and aggressive boxer. ●
