PHOENIX Park’s children’s play area in Runcorn is closing for six weeks as it undergoes a £111,000 makeover.

The refurbishment scheme has been launched by Halton Borough Council and is intended to provide more accessible equipment for children of all ages and abilities.

A spokesman for the local authority said this includes a multi-activity play unit with ramped access, swings with a variety of seats, a flush-floor roundabout, see-saw with extra-supportive seats, a ground-level trampoline and a sensory interactive play train.

Funding is being provided by the WREN landfill grants fund, Halton Council’s area forum cash as well as Windmill Hill Big Local and Tesco’s Bags Of Help scheme.

Phoenix Park opened 12 years ago and lies between Castlefields Avenue East and Windmill Hill.

Other facilities and features include a climbing wall, cafe, skate park, fields, lake, canal and woodland.

The park hosts events including the annual Party In The Park every summer and a ParkRun 5k run every Saturday morning.

Last year, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn used the park to make a speech to supporters ahead of the General Election.

The work will be carried out by Manchester-based firm Dunkil Developments Ltd, which hopes to start work this month and complete the job in six weeks.

The play area will be shut for the works.

Cllr Ron Hignett (public spaces) said: “This will improve the facilities in what is one of the area’s most popular parks.

“I am sure everyone will welcome the work we will be doing on the site.” ●
