Derek’s voluntary work is rewarded

MORE good news emerged from Widnes RUFC when Derek Dyer collected a Lancashire Volunteer award at a ceremony held at Leigh RUFC.

He was nominated by the club for his outstandin­g work across a wide scope of activities.

Derek is tasked with a number of responsibi­lities including rugby chairman, player registrati­on, fixture secretary, kit man and referee’s liaison officer, And, if that lot is not enough, he is also a touch judge for the first-team every Saturday whether it be home or away!

Club president, Stephen Morris, said: “I would just like to say how much Derek deserves this award.

“He is a real asset to the club. He is positive, proactive, and very hardworkin­g, and takes his voluntary position at the club very seriously.”

Not only has his work been recognised by his peers throughout Lancashire, Derek along with fellow volunteer John Brett – whose work with the U14s and the girls’ U13-15 age groups has also been recognised – by also being nominated for the prestigiou­s Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards.

The awards are part of the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer Programme which provides rugby clubs and the rugby community with opportunit­ies to recognise and reward the volunteers who make up such an integral part of the game.

“Both Derek and John work extremely hard for the club and their nomination­s are well deserved,” he said.

Their nomination­s were just two of hundreds of specially selected volunteers invited to attend a drinks reception at Mitsubishi Motors dealership­s or rugby clubs in various locations throughout England.

At each of these events, one volunteer will be announced as a Volunteer of the Year finalist – earning them a place at the Mitsubishi Motors Volunteer of the Year Awards night which will be held later in the year at Twickenham.

Three overall winners will be announced on the evening and each one will receive a brand new Mitsubishi car for a year as a thank you for their continued support of the game. ● The club would like to remind members that the Annual General Meeting will take place at Heath Road on Thursday, June 21 starting at 8pm.
