Team GB star launch for new Aldi branch
ABUDGET supermarket has opened in Runcorn bringing relief to motorists waiting for road works to finish.
Olympic silver medallist Jazmin Carlin cut the ribbon for the Aldi store on Murdishaw Avenue last Thursday.
The Team GB star, who was part of the women’s medalwinning swimming squad at Rio 2016 launched the store with the help of pupils from Murdishaw West Primary School and store manager Graeme Hughes.
While there, Jazmin spoke to the youngsters about the benefits of healthy living.
A store giveaway of free fruit and veg for the first 30 customers took place as part of the event. The supermarket was given the go-ahead by Halton Borough Council planning chiefs in February last year and was pitched as part of a package of ‘regeneration’ schemes around Runcorn, although the Murdishaw plot was previously parkland.
Three retail units and a pub are also being built at the Murdishaw site, and the Halton Arms public house was demolished as part of the wider Murdishaw development.
Drivers in recent weeks were left fuming over tailbacks and delays caused by temporary lights and access roadworks.
Further roadworks are due to take place in coming years in the area with the redevelopment of Murdishaw roundabout as Junction 11a of the M56 motorway linking the major ● ● network with the Mersey Gateway bridge via Runcorn’s Southern and Central expressways. An Aldi spokesman said the store has created 29 jobs.
Speaking after the opening, Olympian Jazmin said: “A big thanks to Aldi Murdishaw this morning for giving me such a warm welcome. It was a pleasure to meet the team, customers, and pupils from Murdishaw West Community Primary.”
Graeme Hughes said: “Jazmin opened the store in style this morning.
“Her Olympic journey is inspirational and it was great to get some healthy eating ideas from her, too.” ●
