IT would be easy to glorify a 16-0 win but to do that would do injustice to Runcorn Linnets Ladies’ opponents. The visitors – Wythenshawe Amateurs Ladies Development – were gallant to the end and never gave up.

Their only crime was encountering a Runcorn side, who had threatened to produce this type of result earlier in their Cheshire Women’s League Premier Divi- sion campaign.

In an excellent all-round display, Runcorn took the lead inside the opening minute through Chelsea Gillies.

Marcia Jones-Sacharewicz capitalised on a mix-up in the goalmouth to make it two on nine minutes.

Becky Barker fired in number three in the 13th minute. Gillies lobbed the Wythenshawe goalkeeper on 21 minutes and, six minutes later, Mandy Kennedy weaved into the box to make it five.

Gillies set up Jones-Sacharewicz to double her tally with the sixth overall before Gillies sealed her hat-trick, Barker with the assist this time.

There was still time in the half for Tempany Carlson, who had already been denied by the woodwork, to cut in from the right to score.

Linnets manager John Pickering brought on all four subs for the second half.

Within five minutes, striker Lile Ashley had scored twice and also hit the bar.

Jones-Sacharewicz scored three times more inside seven minutes, following inspired wing play by Rogers and Isherwood, to complete an individual fivegoal haul.

Ashley added two more, including a cheeky back-heel.

It was left to Gillies to finish a job she had started, lobbing the goalkeeper in the final minute.

Linnets Ladies fell short of their record win of 20-0, set against Neston in a league match at the Millbank Linnets Stadium on October 18, 2015.

This was swiftly followed by a 20-1 victory against the same opposition in a cup tie on November 22 in the same year.
