St Bede’s prove too strong for Millbrow as they claim the silverware
THE first cup final of the year in the Widnes Domino League was fought out between St Bede’s ‘B’ and Millbrow ‘B’ at Farnworth Sports & Social Club as the teams fought for the Battle of Britain Cup.
Millbrow won the drop. However, their pairing of Ken Shingler and Brian Bishop proved that having the drop does not always work in your favour. The pairing of Graham Lucas and John Parker were too good for their opponents winning the contest 2-1.
Undeterred by their opponents’ good start, Millbrow decided that Syd Attwood and Trevor Picton were the pair to unsettle St Bede’s next duo.
They were up against a good team in Vin Murty and Denis Kinsella. Sadly for Millbrow they were overcome without winning a leg.
There then followed a short break for refreshments in which time both captains Jim Swain and Tony Barker could rally their troops.
Jim’s teamtalk worked the better as the pair from St Bede’s, Harry Potter and Peter Craig, proved the successful pairing as they overcame Olly Kerr and Ken Lethbridge 2-0 thus ensuring the match went no further with St Bede’s running out the winners 3-0.
Congratulations go to them and commiserations to Millbrow.
Many thanks also to match referees Andy and Tony and to Farnworth for sponsoring the cup and providing the excellent buffet on the night. ●
