Statue group trip marks end of WW1

-

THE Tom Wilkinson VC statue appeal group is hosting a trip to the Stafford Arboretum on Saturday, November 10.

The trip will be on the eve of the guns falling silent in the First World War 100 years ago.

There will be thought provoking events and sights at the Arboretum, and the Gurkha’s will be remembering their fallen on the day.

Tony Miller, organiser of the event said: “We must remember on the 11/11/1918, millions of people were joyous that the guns had fell silent, but just as many were upset as they had lost loved ones during the war, and many women were finding out on that day that they had become a widow, parents finding out their sons were never coming home.”

“Many men who did manage to return home were horribly injured or mentally affected, which caused many to take their own life later on.”

As the trip is on the day before the centenary, people will be able to commemorate the day in their own way.

The group will travel by coach with free drinks served. There will ● be wheelchair access on the coach, however, advance notice must be given for seats to be removed from the bus.

It costs £20 per person and is a first come first served basis.

Pick up points are at Widnes Library and Runcorn Bus Station, Widnes at 8am and Runcorn 8.25pm.

To reserve a seat contact Tony Miller on 07786 271 420 or email tonymiller27@yahoo.com
