MICHAEL ELLISON believes there is still room for improvement at Runcorn Linnets despite their outstanding 6-1 victory at Colne last Saturday to cement their position at the top of the Evo-Stik League West Division table.

Kris Holt, Freddie Potter, Danny O’Brien (2), Conor McCarthy and Paul Shanley all netted for Linnets in a performance that was described as “flawless” by some fans at the Sovereign Play Stadium.

Despite his side now holding a four point lead at the top of the division after 11 games played, Runcorn manager Ellison is refusing to get carried away with the fine start.

Linnets were promoted to the Evo-Stik for the first time in the club’s history after Hallmark Security League Premier Division glory last season and Ellison has challenged his players to perform even better.

“We’re playing really well in our league performances,” Ellison said after his side made it eight wins out of 11 in the league.

“I know I say the same things every week and it is a cliche but we just don’t look too far ahead.

“We see who the next game is and go about trying to win the next game, and that’s the way it is.

“The lads deserve massive credit.

“We’ll have to improve. “We will improve. “If we can get lads back to full fitness, we will improve, I have no doubt.”

Linnets spent a number of recent campaigns challenging for promotion from the Hallmark Security League Premier Division and were unfortunate to twice miss narrowly out on promotion.

With the club managing to keep many of their stars at the club during this period, however, Ellison believes his players are proving their worth at the next level.

“I think [challenging for promotion for two years] certainly helped but keeping the nucleus of the squad together was important,” he added.

“It was important last season when we won the HSL to keep the secretary@runcorngolfclub.co.uk www.runcorngolfclub.co.uk squad together.

“It was also important this season and I always believed the lads here were good enough to play Evo-Stik and that’s proving to be the case at the minute.

“Obviously you have to have one or two who’ve played at this level before, which we’ve done, but they’re all proving themselves at the minute.”

The division pacesetters’ next challenge in the league is this Saturday when they visit Prescot Cables. The match at Volair Park kicks-off at 3pm.

The Merseysiders have also made a decent start to the campaign and sit in fourth place in the table with 19 points from their 10 games to date.

Linnets do not have a midweek game next week.
