Urgent gas main work shuts one side of main road

-

VICTORIA Road in Widnes is undergoing essential pipework, forcing the closure of one side of it.

A 250-metre old gas main replaced.

Gas network Cadent has made numerous vitis to this underground pipe in the last few years to fix small leaks, stretch of is being ● which causes local disruption.

After another leak was found earlier this month, Cadent decided to completely remove the pipe and insert a durable, modern plastic pipe into the 60-year old cast iron main.

Cadent aims to complete the the work by the end of November and it will stay confined to one lane only.

This means that motorists can continue to use the road, but only in one direction, towards Ashley Way. Traffic travelling in the other direction will be diverted.

Despite the closure, businesses will remain open as usual.

A spokesman for Cadent said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience during these next few weeks, but we hope people understand this is short-term pain for longerterm gain.

“The number of times we’ve had to visit this pipe recently and complete repairs, causing inconven- ience locally, has just become too frequent.

“Once we’ve upgraded this pipe, you shouldn’t see us again here for many years.

“The new pipe will ensure a long-term safe and reliable gas supply, for heating homes in colder months and for year-round hot water and cooking.”
