Let’s cure our back problems

MANAGER Chris Herbert wants to see defensive improvements at Runcorn Town as his side got back to winning ways against Vauxhall Motors last Friday evening.

A Simon Thelwell double and one from Harry Brazel gave Town a 3-1 victory in the FA Vase second round encounter but the boss remains concerned about defensive solidity.

Town have conceded 14 goals in their last six games and Herbert has urged his players to “get it right”.

He said: “For some reason we’re not defending together.

“We’re not even attacking together. I know what the problem is. I’ve told the lads in the changing rooms and we’ve gone through it.

“We’ve just got to keep working. We get frustrated and once one person gets frustrated the next person gets frustrated with him and it all just spirals. We’ve got to get it right. At the end of the day, they’re good players.

“We know we’ll be fine but we can’t keep making these mistakes and dropping points because your top sides like Congleton and City of Liverpool aren’t dropping many points and aren’t conceding many goals.”

Town return to action at Northwich Victoria in The Macron Cup on Sunday afternoon before travelling to the same opposition a week later as Hallmark Security League Premier Division football resumes a week on Saturday.

With the winter period fast approaching and Runcorn trailing pacesetters City of Liverpool by eight points, Herbert asserts the time is nigh for his team to begin picking up points and clawing back the difference on ● Delight for Runcorn Town players following one of their three goals against Vauxhall Motors in their FA Vase second round encounter last Friday night. the Purples.

“City of Liverpool will have games off and we’ll have games off but it’s who can pick up points when you’re playing one weekend and off the next,” the manager added.

“You’ve got to be able to pick up points when the going gets tough through the winter and that’s where we’ve struggled through the last few seasons.

“I think we are better prepared this season.

“I feel we are but we just need to get the lads right.

“They’re lacking a bit in confidence but we just need it to happen now.”

Sunday’s match at Northwich Victoria’s Wincham Park ground kicks-off at the earlier time of 1pm. Town do not have a midweek game next week.
