HE Government was accused of pillaging essential public services in Halton and preparing a ‘trick or treat’ budget.

Mike Amesbury, Labour MP for Weaver Vale, said that despite the Prime Minister’s recent claim that ‘ austerity was over’, any fresh cash injections will fall short of what is needed due to ‘devastating’ cuts since 2010.

He called for the Government to ‘put its money where its mouth is’.

A spokesman for Mr Amesbury’s issued a statement outlining some of the key ways his constituency has been hit.

Cheshire Constabulary has made more than £60m in cutbacks since 2010, meaning it spends 37% less in real terms on policing than it was eight years ago and a further £12m in savings expected in the next two years with the possible loss of 250 front line officers.

At Halton Borough Council, the local authority’s budge has been slashed by £64m since 2010 with £22m more planned over the next three years – total reduction in spending power of 61%.

Meanwhile, Cheshire West And Chester Council, which covers the other part of Mr Amesbury’s constituency, has had its budget reduced by £303m.

The spokesman added that the Local Government Association has said that by 2020 councils will suffered a reduction of core funding since 2010 of nearly £16bn, a loss of 60p in every £1.

Cheshire Fire And Rescue Service’s central Government funding has been cut by 26%, resulting in the loss of 180 full-time fire fighters and an average increase in crews’ arrival times.
