Goldmine lift the silverware against Village

-

THE second competition of the season in the Widnes & District Domino League – the Mick Freeman Memorial Cup Final – was played at the sponsors’ venue Parklands.

Locking horns were Goldmine, who were runners-up in this competition last year, and the Village. This was going to be a tough match for both teams.

The Goldmine got off to a perfect start with Bob Shakeshaft and Dave Hodson overcoming Ken Swindley and Tommy Welding by two legs to one.

Trying not to let the match get beyond them, the Village pairing of the Grady brothers Alan and Peter were pitted against Sean Melia and Tony Hodson. By the narrowest of margins the Goldmine pair won 2-1.

There was a short break for refreshments in which time both captains could rally their troops.

Goldmine’s pairing of Tommy Sutcliffe and Rob Hodson could complete the match if they overcame Village opponents Hughes and O’Connor.

The Village captain’s team-talk worked wonders as they overcame their opponents by two legs to one therefore keeping them in contention.

Next to the table came Gary Codd and Ronnie Codd from the Goldmine and they were paired against Jimmy Brennnan and John Grady. Sadly for the latter they could not turn the match around and were defeated without winning a leg, Goldmine securing the silverware three games to one.

Congratulations go to Goldmine and commiserations to the Village. A big thank-you to Andy and Tony the league referees and to the Parklands club for the superb hotpot and for sponsoring the competition. ● Players from the Goldmine celebrate winning the Mick Freeman Memorial Cup over Village in the Widnes & District Domino League
