Call for statue donations
THE Tom Wilkinson VC statue appeal is calling for donations to support a memorial dedicated to the merchant seamen from Runcorn and Widnes who served in both World Wars.
The appeal committee wants to remember these brave men and plans to have two memorials.
One will be next to the statue of Act Lt Tom Wilkinson VC on Spike Island in West Bank, Widnes, and the other will be in Runcorn.
Tom Wilkinson VC was ● a Merchant Navy seaman and went on to become a Royal Navy seaman.
His statue will be of him as a Royal Navy officer.
Tony Miller said: “Let’s make Halton proud of its heroes. We need the people of Halton to help us.
“This isn’t a Runcorn or Widnes thing, it’s about men and women who’ve served our country, not just Runcorn or Widnes.”
Halton Borough Council is said to have allocated land for the memorials, and is taking care of all the legal matters concerning the statue and memorial.
Anyone wishing to donate can do so through PayPal. Further details are on the website www. thetomwilkinson vcstatueappeal.co.uk or through Just Giving, www. justgiving.com/crowd funding/tony-miller-5
