Call for statue dona­tions

Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News - - Man Admits Role In Drive-by Shooting -

THE Tom Wilkin­son VC statue ap­peal is call­ing for dona­tions to sup­port a memo­rial ded­i­cated to the mer­chant sea­men from Run­corn and Widnes who served in both World Wars.

The ap­peal com­mit­tee wants to re­mem­ber these brave men and plans to have two memo­ri­als.

One will be next to the statue of Act Lt Tom Wilkin­son VC on Spike Is­land in West Bank, Widnes, and the other will be in Run­corn.

Tom Wilkin­son VC was ● a Mer­chant Navy sea­man and went on to be­come a Royal Navy sea­man.

His statue will be of him as a Royal Navy of­fi­cer.

Tony Miller said: “Let’s make Hal­ton proud of its he­roes. We need the peo­ple of Hal­ton to help us.

“This isn’t a Run­corn or Widnes thing, it’s about men and women who’ve served our coun­try, not just Run­corn or Widnes.”

Hal­ton Bor­ough Coun­cil is said to have al­lo­cated land for the memo­ri­als, and is tak­ing care of all the le­gal mat­ters con­cern­ing the statue and memo­rial.
