Sarah beats dyslexia with learning team

-

ARUNCORN cleaner has revealed how taking a punt on seeking help with reading and writing has opened up a world of books to her.

Sarah Gardner, 35, is now enjoying A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – something a few years ago she would not have been able to do.

Having struggled with reading and writing while young, Sarah had been listening to a friend talk about college, and told her she would love to do something like that but could not.

Her pal enquired why and Sarah explained that literacy had always been difficult for her she had even been called ‘stupid’.

With support from her friend and partner, she contacted Halton Borough Council’s adult learning team to see if they could help.

Following maths and English assessments at the Acorn Learning Centre in Castlefields, Runcorn, it was quickly revealed she had dyslexia.

With the support she now receives, her enjoyment of books has flourished.

Sarah said: “Finding out I am dyslexic is the reason I struggled so much when I was younger.

“I am now slowly putting the past behind me and I am looking forward to the future.

“If there is anyone out there who is frightened or worried about learning – ● don’t be!

“The staff and tutors at Halton adult learning will look after you.

“Joining this course has given me confidence that I didn’t think I had and as well as that I have made lots of new friends.”

Cllr Eddie Jones (employment, learning and skills) said: “Congratulations and well done to Sarah for her determination to take advantage from and thus benefit from the council’s offer.

“At Halton we are constantly seeking to make our courses more accessible and as meaningful as possible to our residents.

“So please check out our adult learning web page, review the prospectus or attend one of the enrolment days.

“The variety of courses available may provide something of interest or value to you.”

Enrolment days are due to take place at Acorn Learning Centre in Runcorn from 10.30am5.30pm on Tuesday, December 11, and Wednesday, January 2, and at Kingsway Learning Centre in Widnes from 10.30am-5.30pm on Thursday, December 13, and Thursday, January 3.
