Energy plant operator gave out £800,000

- BY OLIVER CLAY

AHALTON Council report has revealed some of the latest schemes to receive cash grants funded by incinerator gate fees.

The document, published ahead of this Monday’s development control committee meeting, revealed that nearly £800,000 was approved in total under a recent round of applications.

These include £209,000 for Runcorn Town Park ‘southern path’ improvements, £205,600 for ‘sustainable urban development’ in Widnes, £60,700 for the borough’s war memorials, £156,600 for Barrows Green in Widnes, £52,500 for Runcorn Hill Bowling Green, £21,000 for a Runcorn Hill footbridge and £50,000 a year ongoing for the Runcorn Station Quarter.

There were smaller grants of £15,000 for an ‘environmental contingency fund’, £7,600 to refurbish a historic sewer gas lamp, and £8,000 over three years for Sanders Hey play area in Brookvale, Runcorn.

A Halton Council spokeswoman told the Weekly News that all the applications have been approved since the document – which displays some projects as deferred for decision – was published.

The environmental fund was set up as one of the permission conditions of the Runcorn energyfrom-waste incinerator, operated by Viridor and providing power to the nearby Inovyn chemical works, and Viridor has said it also provides enough to power around 70,000 homes as well.

Under the scheme, the council receives 68p per tonne of waste processed at the plant.

Past projects have included air monitoring in Weston for 12 months, Runcorn Hill Park improvements and extra cash for the ‘community payback team’ for cleaning up rubbish around the borough.

The council administers the funding and as well as its own initiatives accepts applications from residents for smaller grants of up to £20,000 via the Viridor credits scheme. • FREE HOME
