Aldi to open new outlet
ALDI is to open another supermarket in Widnes this year creating around 30 jobs.
The business said the store is under construction on Derby Road and is among six branches being launched in the North West in 2019.
An Aldi spokesman said the openings are expected to create around 180 jobs.
It already has a supermarket on Green Oaks Way in the town centre.
The spokesman said the Derby Road store will have an updated layout, with more space for fresh, chilled and food-to-go ranges, more simple layouts and brighter, wider aisles.
Stock will include essential groceries and the ‘Specially Selected’ range, plus products from British suppliers and a 100% British everyday fresh meat range.
The supermarket is also refurbishing 12 stores in the region as part of a £300m investment to convert its existing supermarkets into its more customer-focused layout.
Aldi recently achieved a record market share of 8% and attracted more shoppers than Morrisons in the first quarter of the year according to Kantar Worldpanel data.
The supermarket chain operates more than 825 stores, including more than 155 in the North West, with a goal to reach 1,200 UK outlets by 2025.
Ruth Doyle, Aldi UK regional managing director, said: “We’ve set out ambitious plans for this year and we’re investing heavily across the North West to ensure even more people in the region can shop and save closer to home.
“We have a fantastic team across the area and this means we can grow and offer even more employment opportunities for local people.
“We’re excited to see how the stores develop over the next few months and I would encourage local people to keep an eye out for recruitment opportunities.”
