Police to launch review into Billy Braces funeral

- BY JENNY KIRKHAM

POLICE say they are going to “review” the large number of people who turned out to the funeral of a popular Runcorn man during lockdown.

Officers say they will decide whether action is needed against the crowds that turned out for the funeral of the man known as “Billy Braces”.

A trailer carrying flowers travelled through Runcorn Old Town on Friday, festooned with photographs and balloons.

And a number of people followed it through the streets.

Cheshire Police said after the funeral ended they dispersed people who had travelled there for the send off.

Officers say the lockdown regulations were explained to the groups and also said they will carry out a review.

This will determine whether any further action is needed.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: “On Friday, February 12 a funeral procession and ceremony took place in Runcorn Old Town.

“A significant number of mourners had travelled to pay their respects and Cheshire police officers attended in a bid to ensure that current Covid-19 regulations in relation to gatherings and funerals were complied with.

“Officers engaged and explained the lockdown regulations to those present, and encouraged them to stick to the rules.

“As a result, a number of people were dispersed and a review will take place to assess if any follow-up action is necessary.

“We recognise the impact of the national restrictions, particularly at times when families are grieving such a tragic loss, but it is in all our interest to continue to comply with the regulations to help protect the NHS and save lives.”

Tributes to Billy Braces were shared online ahead of the funeral by those who knew him.

On Facebook, Chantelle Price said: “Rip uncle billy braces.

“Please keep his wife, children and all family in your prayers at this sad time.”

Delilah Sharp also said: “Wish me old grandad was here.

“He was like a dad to us. The best old grandad in the world.

“The boys love and miss him very much.

“Keep his family in prayers for the coming days ahead.”
