Progession pleasing for boss Towey

- BY CALLUM CHADWICK

KEV Towey was in buoyant mood following Widnes’ 2-2 draw with Cefn Druids, despite the Welsh Premier side notching a 90th minute equaliser.

The Whites twice led through Jack Banister and a trialist’s penalty, but Druids twice pegged the hosts back for a share of a spoils.

And joint-manager Towey feels his side are preparing well for the start of the new season after another encouraging display.

“I think today and last Saturday at Radcliffe are examples of two really good performances,” Towey said.

“We’ve tailored pre-season so that we peak against higherranked opposition and we’ve competed well in both games.

“We’ve had lads play today who are looking to come into the club and have done themselves no harm at all.

“There probably wasn’t too much familiarity amongst some of the players with each other but we didn’t look dis-jointed and we still played the way we like to play which was really good to see.

“I’m probably disappointed not to have won the game which is a similar feeling to what I had last week, but I felt that we had achieved what we wanted to achieve out of the game after around 65-70 minutes today in terms of progression and preparation which is really pleasing.”

Widnes fielded a blend of youngsters and trialists in their 18man squad due to injuries to senior players, and Towey was impressed by a number of performances put in by individuals.

He said: “There’s a couple of boys who played today who we’ll definitely be having a conversation with about bringing them into the club.

“We’ve got

Garswood [United] and Flint [Town United] to come this week and it’ll be two different sides that play each of those games as it’ll certainly be two very difficult tests for us.

“It’s another opportunity for players to make a claim for a shirt as we near the start of the season.”
