The STFC, which is a government department, announced it was embarking on creating a new “£210m centre” in a joint venture with IBM for artificial intelligence and quantum computing research over five years.

It was not clear at the time whether the centre would be established within existing facilities or would include fresh construction, and nor do the freshlyfiled plans clarify whether the supercomputing centre is connected to the IBM joint venture.
