Same story is so frustrating for Towey

- BY CALLUM CHADWICK

JOINT-MANAGER Kev Towey cut a frustrated figure after Widnes fell to a 2-1 home defeat against Mossley on Saturday.

The Whites were again left to rue missed chances and fell behind after 23 minutes via Anthony Brown’s fortuitous effort.

Sewa Marah made it 2-0 shortly after the hour-mark and despite Ben

Wharton halving the deficit 15 minutes from time,

Mossley held on for all three points.

“It’s the same story, isn’t it?”

Towey said.

“I can’t really add too much to that. I can’t dissect it anymore. It’s clear and obvious.

“Their goal sucked a little bit of life out of us in the second half of the first period but then we got to half-time, had a chat about how disappointed we were and picked ourselves up to go again.

“But then it was exactly the same, which is difficult to take.”

Mossley survived a late Widnes onslaught with Wharton hitting the woodwork while Jordan Barrow glanced a header agonisingly wide with the final touch of the contest.

And while the Whites were perhaps unfortunate not to escape with a point, Towey admitted that his side had more than enough opportunities to win the game.

“It was the same at [Runcorn] Linnets on the opening day - we missed a penalty at 0-0 which would have put us in a commanding position,” Towey added.

“Kidsgrove on Tuesday night was similar where we’ve missed chances at 0-0 and today was the same.

“Every game we’ve played in so far this season I think we’ve had enough chances to win those football matches and that’s not aimed at any single individual, anyone on the team can score goals.

“In the first half alone today, Sammy [Adetiloye], Jordan Barrow and Ben all had gilt-edged chances. I know exactly what it’s like to be a forward who has missed a few chances and is waiting for the next one so we just need a strong mentality to get through it and I do think it will happen for us some game soon.”

Widnes were in action again on Bank Holiday Monday when they fell to a 1-0 defeat, this time on the road at Rylands. Next up it’s Trafford away on Saturday before the home game against Bootle next Tuesday.
