STOP THE OBSTRUCTION OF CLIMATE CHANGE EFFORTS

-

BRITAIN has suffered heavy flooding in the last few years, with rainfall levels which had been predicted as happening once every 500 years occurring regularly.

We have just seen flash flooding in London and Edinburgh. Over 200 people died in German and Belgian floods in July. The American North West was trapped under a nightmarish heat dome for weeks last month, with record high temperatures and massive forest fires.

Now Greece has been hit with record temperatures of 47°C (117°F), with ground temperatures in downtown Athens reaching 55°C (131°C) and Athens besieged by forest fires.

The IPCC international group of scientists have this week published warnings that the world is headed for disaster unless we rapidly reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases by switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

And the response? Labour’s plans for three giant factories producing batteries and for tidal lagoons remain unloved, the scheme to improve the energy efficiency of housing has been wound down, as Boris Johnson’s press secretary and COP 26 spokesman says she doesn’t fancy electric cars and is sticking with her diesel.

And a group of Conservative MPs and right-wing lobbyists have got together to try to obstruct Government action against climate change, even as Britain prepares to host the COP 26 international conference aimed at international agreement to reduce emissions.
