- BY CALLUM CHADWICK

LONG-SERVING Widnes FC management duo Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey stepped down from their roles following the club’s 3-0 defeat at Trafford on Saturday.

A statement from officials at the club confirmed they had accepted the duo’s resignations after a difficult start to the NPL season, losing their last four games.

The statement said: “It is with great reluctance that Widnes Football Club has accepted the resignations of joint-managers Steve Akrigg and Kev Towey from their positions with immediate effect.

“Both Steve and Kev have served the club with distinction as both players and managers, delivering numerous successes while at the helm.

“Kev departs as the club’s record goalscorer, scoring 73 goals in 136 appearances as a player while Steve played 54 games, scoring three times.

“Current club captain Mike Burke will take interim charge of the team.

“As managers, the duo steered the club to promotion from the North West Counties Premier Division against all odds in 2018, winning 23 of the final 25 games of the season to finish as runners-up with 96 points.

“Steve and Kev then masterminded victory over Burscough in the 2018 Macron Cup final before going on to establish the club in the Northern Premier League over the last three seasons.”

Akrigg and Towey depart as the club’s longest serving and most successful management team, overseeing 147 games in charge with 66 victories.

Chairman Ian Ross said: “It’s always a sad day whenever there is a parting of ways and even more so in this instance.

“I’ve personally known both Ste and Kev now for a number of years and the club owe both of them a massive amount for their contributions as both players and managers – instrumental in the club achieving successive promotions in the North West Counties League in both capacities.

“Kev has also been involved in the junior section of the club since its inception and there’s a lot of people in and around the football club who see him, rightly so, as a club legend.

“Both myself and the Board of Directors would like to thank Ste and Kev for their work and dedication and wish them all the very best for the future.”
