JUNIOR ROUND-UP PAUL BREEZE

THE Wild Academy Under 14 team picked up a superb last ditch 4-5 away win over the highly rated Sheffield juniors at iceSheffield on Sunday.

Widnes took the lead with a goal from team captain Aidan Lamb after just 23 seconds and the score remained 0-1 at the first period break.

Sheffield scored twice early in the second period to take the lead but a second strike from Lamb levelled again on 29 minutes.

Sheffield edged ahead again with a 3rd goal just 30 seconds into the third period but Lamb’s hat-trick goal just 30 seconds after that tied the game once more.

This was a highly entertaining and evenly fought game throughout and Sheffield took the lead again on 36 minutes only for Widnes to equalise once more with a debut Wild goal for Sophia Green.

With time ticking away and a draw looking the likely result, Sheffield removed their netminder for the last minute in favour of an extra attacker but the move backfired and

Widnes secured the win with an empty net goal from Jared Knowles just 18 seconds from time.

Finn Ogden put in a superb performance in goal for the Wild, turning away 18 of the 22 shots that he faced.

Widnes’ Caleb Eddlestone put the home team in front.

The Storm then scored twice more to lead 2-3 at the first period break.

Three unanswered goals saw Manchester draw further ahead in the second period and they were 2-9 up by the time Ollie Cliffe fired in a third for Widnes.

A late goal for Manchester edged them into double figures but the Wild youngsters came away with lots of positives to build on.

The netminding duties for the Wild were shared by Chun Hei Kan and Miks Kersteins who turned away 32 of the 42 shots they faced between them.

WILD ACADEMY U16S. 13 BLACKBURN U16S ....... 1

THE Wild Academy Under 16 team got their new season off to a flying start with an 18-1 hammering of near neighbours Blackburn at Planet

Ice Widnes on Saturday.

However, due to the Junior League rules about onesided contests, official scoring is suspended once one team or the other gets 12 goals ahead (8 goals at U12 level) - so this match will be recorded on the league table as a

13-1 win for Widnes.

WILD ACADEMY UNDER 10S

THE Wild Under 10s team hosted a four team “cross-ice” tournament featuring opposition from Bradford, Manchester Storm and Telford at Planet Ice Widnes on Sunday.

Cross-ice games are played for fun on a reduced playing surface and no scores or player statistics are recorded.

The emphasis is on encouraging the players to concentrate on skating skills and developing their puck handling and passing in a less competitive environment.
