FIREWORKS fans will have to find other ways to keep entertained this autumn after Halton Borough Council cancelled the annual display.

The spectacle, which usually draws crowds to the banks on both sides of the River Mersey to watch the dazzling pyrotechnics above the Silver Jubilee Bridge, has been ditched due to Covid-19.

A Halton Council spokeswoman said the local authority was “disappointed” to announce the cancellation.

She said the decision was made because resources have been prioritised elsewhere due to the borough’s infection rate remaining high.

The display was also cancelled last year.

It is hoped that this popular event will return next year.

The council has moved to console disappointed residents by emphasising the array of cultural events and venues on offer.

These include shows returning to The Brindley when it reopens on Monday, September 20, plus live music and street theatre as part of the Celebrate Halton Borough of Culture year.

Other highlights are the Museum of the Moon touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram, and which presents a six-metre spherical model of the moon featuring a detailed lunar map, plus the Light! woodland lantern trail in the grounds of Norton Priory, accompanied by music.

According to Public Health England, there were 446 new cases of Covid-19 recorded in Halton last week, a rate of 329.8 per 100,000 people, and a drop of 19.2% from the previous week.

PLANS have been submitted for 187 houses as part of a massive ongoing development in Daresbury.

The proposals are part of the wider Daresbury Garden Village scheme on former farmland off Delph Lane.

The project is split into northern, central and southern sections and outline permission was originally granted in 2018 for the northern and central aspects.

Now a reserved matters application – which gives specific details for the central event will not be going ahead, I’m delighted to be able to announce the reopening of The Brindley after so long. It is a much-loved venue and has section – has been submitted to the council’s planning department.

The plans include 187 houses ranging from two to five bedroom properties as well as green spaces, children’s play areas, walking and cycle routes. The Redrow site is on 11 hectares of former farmland to the south of the A558 a mile from Daresbury Village and would be accessible via a new road.

The latest phase of the scheme include 51 threebedroom houses, 116 four bed, 19 five bed properties and one, two-bed property.

A design and access been sorely missed by theatre-goers.

“The theatre has been closed since March 2020 and has been playing an important role in supporting the rollout statement submitted to the council’s planning department by Redrow, said: “The vision is to create a responsive, vibrant new sustainable development which will provide a range of high quality aspirational family homes for Daresbury and the wider Runcorn area.

“The house types are diverse and range from two bed to five bed dwellings, covering a wide range of market demand.”

Housing construction in the area has long been a contentious issue, with the area’s MP Mike Amesbury just last week hitting out at the scale and pace of development of the vaccination programme. The team there have been working really hard to put arrangements in place that will allow shows to now take place.” and declaring “enough is enough”.

Government agency Homes England is currently consulting the public over proposals for up to 850 houses in the area.

There are plans for a 250-home extension to Sandymoor and a further 600 houses south of the ChesterWarrington railway line on farmers’ fields either side of Red Brow Lane in Daresbury.

This follows other greenfield schemes in the area either being built, or with planning permission, for almost 1,500 homes, plus a large commercial development.

Further events are added regularly to the programme, so visit the website www.celebratehalton.co.uk for the latest information or follow @Halton2021
