Warning for bike owners

-

OWNERS have been urged to lock up their motorbikes and bicycles after a spate of burglaries.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman said the incidents have taken place over the last couple of weeks and have targeted people’s garages.

Owners have been urged to do what they can to make it more difficult for thieves to steal their property.

The spokeswoman said “a lot” of the burglaries involved garages that weren’t locked.

Bike owners have been urged to make sure their property is secure and locked.

Vigilance is advised. Inspector Helen Rowland, of Runcorn Local Policing Unit, said: “Burglary is a particularly distressing crime as it targets victims in the place that they should feel safe - their homes.

“I know that the community will feel concerned about the recent spike of burglaries involving bikes in the area but I would like to reassure residents that we are doing all we can to track down those responsible.

“We have also stepped up patrols in a bid to target those who think that they can get away with this type of crime.

“I would also urge residents to ensure that they lock up their property, including garages and sheds, in order to make it more difficult for them to fall foul to these selfish individuals.”

Options for improving security include:

● Using a batteryoperated shed or garage alarm.

● Consider a batteryoperated shed or garage alarm.

● Think about installing CCTV.

● Lock everything away securely - tools should be locked inside a locker or box or secured by a chain or both.

● Secure any bike to the ground or lockable stand within the shed or garage.

● Consider obtaining a padlock with no exposed screws.

● Drape an old sheet or blanket over the top of bikes to keep them covered from view.

● Never leave a garage or shed door unlocked if not around.

● Mark property with the owner’s name, postcode or even forensically.
